Portals

Portals connect locations, worlds, and contained realities.

Some function only as doorways. Others open into complete pocket worlds with their own landscapes, buildings, ecosystems, and passage of time.

Public Portals

Public portals are part of Amblem’s regulated transportation system. They allow people to travel between established locations without experiencing a meaningful passage of time.

The Council monitors, maintains, and restricts these portals. Destinations must be properly anchored so that travelers arrive safely.

Constructed Portals

Some supernatural beings can construct private portals using symbols, runes, and physical materials such as chalk.

A constructed portal normally requires:

  • a known or clearly visualized destination;
  • an anchor connected to that destination;
  • a completed symbol or rune;
  • and enough power to open and maintain the passage.

Attempting to open a portal without a reliable destination can leave travelers stranded between locations or cause the portal to collapse.

Summoned Portals

A small number of beings can summon portals instinctively without constructing the full passage by hand.

This ability is rare. It must still be learned and controlled, and not every angel, demon, or other supernatural creature has it.
