The series begins with The Tome of Talula, a dark fantasy adventure involving a fallen angel, a demon, a cursed direwolf, a mysterious woman, a floating skull, and a quest for a god-killing dagger.
Tomes of Amblem explores themes of redemption, forgiveness, faith, found family, identity, corruption, and the belief that no one is ever truly too far gone.
Lux M. Vale plans six books in the main Tomes of Amblem series, along with additional stories and spinoffs set within the world of Amblem.
Apparently, creating one fantasy world wasn’t enough work.
What Does Lux M. Vale Write?
Although Tomes of Amblem is Lux M. Vale’s primary series, Amblem is not the only fictional world fighting for her attention.
She is also developing two additional novels.
One is a Southern Gothic novel exploring grief, murder, protection, morality, and one uncomfortable question:
If a murder was committed to protect someone, is it still murder?
The other follows two police officers whose relationship seems to exist somewhere beyond friendship.
That novel explores grief, codependency, identity, and what happens when two people build so much of themselves around one another that the end of their relationship leaves them questioning who they are without the other person.
Both projects have, however, been forced to wait their turn.
Because Boon is the loudest of the group.
Writing Stories Other People Are Afraid to Touch
Lux M. Vale holds a Liberal Arts degree with a minor in Creative Writing and a master’s degree in Secondary Education with a focus in English. She is also currently pursuing a master’s degree in Management.
Her education may cross disciplines, but storytelling has remained at the center of her professional and creative work.
As an author, Lux focuses on telling stories that aren’t afraid to explore uncomfortable subjects.
Grief doesn’t scare her.
Neither do death, faith, complicated morality, damaged relationships, monsters, trauma, redemption, or characters who don’t fit neatly into categories of good and evil.
Her fiction frequently asks what happens after the terrible thing.
Who are you after grief changes you?
Can someone who has done terrible things still be redeemed?
Can an action be both loving and morally wrong?
What happens when someone desperately wants to be known but is terrified of what being truly known requires?
Lux doesn’t particularly want easy answers.
Easy answers make for short books.
The Person Behind the Books
When Lux M. Vale isn’t writing, she can usually be found walking through the woods, scavenging for interesting things, finding new ways to annoy her family, terrifying her friends with whatever she’s currently hyper-focused on, or completely avoiding adult responsibilities whenever reasonably possible.
She likes stories with teeth.
She likes characters who are complicated.
She likes monsters who might not actually be the monsters.
And she has a habit of becoming emotionally attached to fictional people she created herself, which seems unfair considering she is also personally responsible for everything terrible that happens to them.
There is probably a psychological study in there somewhere.
We’re not going to look for it.
Why Lux M. Vale Wrote The Tome of Talula
The Tome of Talula is Lux M. Vale’s debut novel and the beginning of the Tomes of Amblem series.
It is also a story she felt called to write.
As a Christian author writing dark fantasy, Lux wanted to tell a story about God and redemption without pretending faith makes life clean, simple, or painless.
The result is a Christian dark fantasy novel containing Scripture and Christian themes alongside demons, angels, vampyrs, violence, gore, swear words, morally complicated characters, yearning, found family, and closed-door romance.
Because darkness isn’t the opposite of faith.
Sometimes darkness is where someone goes looking for the light.
