Dark Fantasy Romance Without Spice

It’s a closed-door romance set in a fantasy setting because I don’t write graphic intimate scenes.

So instead, you will get a graphic description of hell and consumption.

You get an angel who chose his wife and refused to find someone else when she panicked and left.

You get an anomaly who was taken advantage of and broken, all in the name of love.

You get a nephilim who just wants a normal family dinner that doesn’t result in her father stabbing her boyfriend…for the second time.

You get a sarcastic floating skull cryptid who wants his body back so he can hold the hand of the woman he loves.

You get a wolf who turned human so he could date an anthropomorphic fox lady.

Then got cursed with a Medusa-style curse because this is Amblem.

So he can’t even look at her.

You get a gluttony demon who could literally eat anything his heart desires.

Finds said thing.

Only to decide not to eat the one thing he wants, so instead she devours him.

Ritually.

Other hot takes you get:

  • Corrupt government
  • The resistance
  • religous cults
  • Vampyr Mafias
  • Survival of the fittest
  • and a tyrant.

My book isn’t a vehicle for the characters to have spicy scenes. My book camouflages as a romantasy when it’s actually about grief, redemption, and yearning.

It’s about looking at someone so reverently that you don’t want to touch them because you feel like you could hurt them.

My glutton refused to touch the woman he loves without vows.

The 148,000 words and the 68 chapters are full of plot, lore, and worldbuilding.

It’s closed-door—not clean. There’s violence, horror, grief, trauma, and monsters—just not explicit sex.

If I had a guess, I would say my audience should be young adult…18+

Oh, and if you don’t believe me. Here is an excerpt from The Tome of Talula.

Out of context.

“This isn’t our fight. You could’ve left with me,” Fen pressed.

“I never belonged there. You know it,” Ezra countered.

“You belonged,” Fen swallowed hard, “I belong at your side.”

“And they would have shunned you for choosing me,” she whispered.

“I was shunned anyway,” Fen shrugged. “You know who my father is.”

A silence fell between them.

Fen caught Ezra’s shadow shifting awkwardly.

“I did choose you,” Fen stated, firm, unshaking. “I still do. Tail, hollow, bark, rot—whatever it is. I chose all of it. And I don’t care who shuns me for it.”

Ezra’s breath caught; her tail flicked once, betraying the smile she tried to hide. She dropped her gaze, armor crumbling, letting the hope flicker briefly across her face before it collapsed under the weight of it.

“Do you ever think about what we could’ve been?” she asked, focusing on the space just above his head.
